Eccentric pop star Bjork has returned to the movies to play a woman who becomes a whale in a surreal new film by artist boyfriend Matthew Barney.

The Icelandic singer, who insisted she'd never act again after hating the experience on the set of Dancer in the Dark, features in Barney's odd anti-whaling art film, DRAWING RESTRAINT 9, which is part of his new exhibition in Japan.

In the film, Bjork and Barney play a couple preparing for a traditional Japanese wedding, who find themselves stranded on a whaling ship. After seeing the horrors of the whaling trade, they chop off their legs and mutate into whales.

Bjork also performs the songs on the short film's soundtrack.
