Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" Isn't That Dreadful At All

Eva Green Josh Hartnett Billie Piper Timothy Dalton

Whenever a show or movie tries to make a show out of a mix of gothic literary characters, it usually ends up, rather aptly, a Frankenstein monster of a story – hammy at best, clumsy and unwatchable at worst. But Showtime has been on the ball with it’s sex-and-violence dramas of late, and they’re setting up a pretty compelling story with their new show, Penny Dreadful.

Eva Green
Eva Green is creepily brilliant as a paranormal expert in the first episode.

So far several familiar faces have made direct or indirect appearances – Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Mina Harker (nee Murray, of Dracula fame), Jack the Ripper and so on. Then there are the new faces, like Eva Greene’s endlessly enjoyable (and possibly sociopathic) Vanessa Ives, who appears to be the partner of Timothy Dalton’s Sir Malcolm Murray. And she’s about as awesomely creepy as it gets.

The Hunt Is On For A New Doctor Who, But Which Cultural Barrier Should The Next Time Lord Break?

Doctor Who Matt Smith Billie Piper

Matt Smith announced last week that he is to step down from the role that made him a household name, leaving the door open for the 12th Doctor in the show's 50 year run to step into Smith's shoes. As the 11th white actor to play the Time Lord moves on to bigger things, there is a strong demand from the public for the next Doctor to break the mould a little a bring in the first female or ethnic actor to take on the role.

The man behind the momentous return of the show, Steven Moffat, has already green-lit a change from the norm and the mounting pressure to introduce a bit of diversity on the show may prove too much for the people in charge of casting at the BBC. Still, a quick look at the odds for the next Doctor seems to indicate that things won't change too much at all, with the top odd all being designated to various white, male actors.

The top three tips for the next Time Lord are Cutting It star Ben Daniels, Irish actor Damien Molony (of Being Human fame) and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, with former Doctor Who sidekick Billie Piper and Kinky Boots star Chiwetel Ejiofor the favourite non-white males to take up the mantle. Neither of these two make much sense though, as having a former sidekick regenerate as a Doctor would be too weird even for the Doctor, whilst Ejiofor is frankly too good and too established an actor to make the move to television when he should really be one of the main names to take up Daniel Craig's place as James Bond or being offered Oscar-worthy roles instead.

WHO Will Be Next Doctor Who? Place Your Bets Now!

Matt Smith Rupert Grint Ben Whishaw Andrew Scott Billie Piper David Beckham Jason Statham Simon Cowell

Matt Smith hasn't even given up his role as the Doctor in the BBC's Doctor Who yet but speculation is already rife over who will take over command of the TARDIS as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor is set to step down this Christmas, having debuted in January 2010.

William Hill have drawn up a list of odds; the most favourable, surprisingly, is for the next Doctor to be played by a female actor.

The bookies current favourite, at 10/1, is 31 year-old Russell Tovey, best known for his roles as werewolf, George Sands, in BBC drama Being Human and the character, Rudge, in both the stage and screen adaptations of The History BoysTovey took to Twitter to lament the stepping down of Smith in a statement that has fuelled speculation he might be in talk to be the next Doctor: "Sad to hear of Matt Smith's doctor departure, he truly is a superb actor and made the Doc proper.. Who's next tho eh? Who's next.. Hmmm x" Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise, jointly ranks alongside Tovey with 10/1 odds. William Hill spokesman, Rupert Adams says he thinks Grint, 24, would "be perfect for the role."
