Bill Nunn - 25th anniversary screening of 'Do The Right Thing' at the closing night of the 2014 BAMcinemaFest at BAM Harvey Theater - Arrivals - New York City, New York, United States - Sunday 29th June 2014
An underprivileged mother (Gyllenhaal) determined to do the best for her child, takes action on discovering the failing situation of her daughter's inner city school. Her daughter cannot read and even comments that the school doesn't care about punctuality or the fact that many students are suffering and struggling with learning difficulties. After her daughter is punished and locked in a closet by an incompetent teacher because she didn't 'follow the rules', the mother decides enough is enough and enlists the help of a desperate teacher (Davis), whose son is also struggling to learn to read and write, to help her take over the school. They put everything on the line to battle through the teacher's union, challenging and incapable teachers, and a sceptical principal and make the school (and therefore the violent gang and drug ridden neighbourhood) a better place for underprivileged children.

The Legend of 1900 is the story of a boy's journey to manhood, never having stepped foot on dry land. Abandoned on an ocean liner and named for the year in which he was born, 1900 (Tim Roth - Hoodlum, Reservoir Dogs) grows up within the confines of the trans-Atlantic steamer Virginia. His prodigious talent for piano is discovered at a young age and 1900 spends his days entertaining passengers from all over the world one boatload after another. As he gets older his reputation proliferates to the point that 1900 would be a rich man if he were ever willing to part with his life aboard the ship. However, despite prodding from his friend Max (Pruitt Taylor Vince - Dr. Dolittle, The End of Violence) and others, he is content to remain a fixture at sea. What will come of 1900 as the war approaches and the waves of immigrants recede? Will he move on, or stay forever in the confines of his ship?

Henry (Harrison Ford) is a typical bad father and no-good husband. An overworked, big-shot lawyer idolized by his co-workers (he's the money guy), he's hated by his wife (Annette Bening) and teenage daughter (Mikki Allen). Why? Well, as far as I can tell, when his daughter spills orange juice he's real strict in punishing her, he never holds his wife's hand in public, and he won't buy his daughter a puppy. The movie doesn't much show or explain this side of Henry's personality, so I guess it's a given that he's an all-around, self-obsessed, insensitive jerk. As these plots go, Henry needs to get his priorities straight; he's due for a knockdown, a comeuppance.

One of the more audacious plots I've seen, this sub's mission is to infiltrate a Neo-Nazi group at a military prep school and bust it up. It's not hard to find the Nazis -- they're the ones with bizarrely shaved heads and the swastika brands. But when they start shooting bazookas at the nosy substitute, well, that's when things get rough.

Just you're typical gangster/melodrama/black comedy/romance flick, Things To Do... is a stylish story about a few days in the life of Jimmy the Saint (Andy Garcia). Jimmy plays a mobster-gone-good whose attempt at legitimacy is a business known as "Afterlife Advice," where terminally ill clients can videotape future advice for their loved ones.

Here's why Toby Maguire's Spider-Man is the greatest superhero in movie history:
Maguire so completely embodies the character's unique yinand yang -- the joyous, daredevil confidence of Spidey and the sweet, self-doubtingyoung chump that is Peter Parker -- that the exhilarating action in "Spider-Man2" is less interesting than his inner turmoil at being torn betweendoing what he's compelled to do and having the life he wants.

There are enough holes in the legal minutia of "Runaway Jury" to keep anyone with a law degree laughing from beginning to end. But for the rest of us, this fast-paced thriller's twist-crescendo-ing plot and sharp performances should at least delay the feeling of being duped until after the credits roll.
Another popcorny courtroom concoction from a John Grisham novel, the movie is a sensationalized peek into jury tampering during a big-money wrongful-death suit filed against an assault-weapon manufacturer after a workplace shooting.
The film wears its politics on its sleeve: the rich, cigar-smoking, unrepentant gun industry honchos have hired an unscrupulous jury consultant (deliciously iniquitous Gene Hackman) with the high-tech means to dig up dirt and create graphic-intensive computer-screen portfolios on everybody who received a jury summons for the case.
