Would it be too much to ask to have Bill Murray play the lead?
Groundhog Day, the classic 1993 comedy starring Bill Murray, is heading to Broadway in spring 2017 for a new musical from the creators of Matilda. Composer-lyricist Tim Michin, director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and set and costume designer Rob Howell will collaborate on the show with writer Danny Rubin - the co-writer of the movie.
Groundhog Day was a huge hit for Bill Murray and Harold Ramis
The movie, also written by Harold Ramis, starred Bill Murray as a cocky weatherman who gets caught in a time loop that forces him to relive Groundhog Day again, again and again. It's considered a classic of its genre.
Warchus has pedigree on Broadway and won a Tony award for God of Carnage and Billy Elliot, as well as helming The Norman Conquests.

Rudin is a seasoned producer with a string of hits including Larry David's Fish in the Dark, Skylight and the huge grossing Book of Mormon. He'll work on Groundhog Day alongside Shuffle Along and All That Followed.
The Groundhog Day musical will begin previews on January 23, 2017 ahead of a March 9, 2017 opening at a venue yet to be announced. Casting remains to be announced - though we can always hope for Bill Murray, right?
"Even if you applaud Bill Murray's evolution from inspired comedian to minimalist seriocomic actor, it's a relief to revisit his most varied and charming role as Phil Connors," said the New Yorker's critic Michael Sragow of the movie upon its release.
"While Murray's deadpan putdowns and dry dismissals of provincial peccadilloes are the comic highlights, Groundhog Day is no supercilious rip of small-town U.S.A," said the Hollywood Reporter.
