Comedian Bill Cosby has offered a helping hand to an American university which has suffered a summer of scandals.

The former COSBY SHOW star plans to put on a free show at BAYLOR UNIVERSITY in Waco, Texas, on Thursday (04SEP03) to boost flagging spirits after the shocking death of a student.

He says, "There may be a whole ton of people who are all so tired of looking at this stuff on television and tired of reading about it, who just want to come in and hear students yelling and rallying for themselves, to hear professors saying, 'Yes, this is a wonderful school and this is about education.'"

The news is a welcome boost for the Baptist university, which has been embroiled in mounting controversy since the death of basketball player Patrick DENNEHY earlier this summer (03). His former teammate, CARLTON DOTSON, has been charged in connection with Dennehy's shooting death.

Baylor's basketball program has been seriously tarnished in the resulting fallout. Both the university's head basketball coach and athletic director have resigned.
