Beyonce schools us all in PR Damage Control 101.
No, Beyonce will not tallk about the Solange/Jay Z elevator video anymore. But being Beyonce, she’ll shut it down in the most epic way possible – with a line in her surprise remix of Flawless featuring Nicki Minaj. The single dropped on Saturday, because timing might not be these women’s strong suit, but making news sure is. So expect to hear a lot more “I woke up like this” chanting in the coming weeks.
Beyonce and Jay Z are pretty much untouchable at this point.
Admittedly, the Standard elevator mention is very brief. Everything Yonce had to say was: “Of course sometimes sh-t go down when there's a billion dollars on the elevator.” Which is an innocuous rap lyric in and of its own, but from it we can conclude two things: A) much like the honey badger, Beyonce don’t care and B) It takes exactly 14 words from Beyonce for the media to have a full-blown freakout, which has up until this point lasted for three whole days. Although if she really tried, she could probably beat her own record and do it in three words.
As for the rest of the song, Nicki kills her verse, like she does with most professional ventures, and the whole thing is generally very, very good. We could have done with less AutoTune – it’s not like Mrs. Carter’s voice needs it – but this is how you make a remix these days, apparently. The song can be heard on Bey’s website and is also available on iTunes. Meanwhile, Minaj just released her new single Anaconda this Monday, after a week’s delay, which we now know the reason for.
In the wake of all that publicity, Nicki dropped Anaconda. Smart move.
