LATEST: French rock star Bertrand Cantat has been released from prison after serving half of an eight-year sentence for killing his actress girlfriend. The Noir Desir singer was convicted of beating Marie Trintignant to death in Lithuania in 2003, but served his sentence in his native France. Cantat, who was released early for good behaviour, killed Trintignant during an argument over a mobile phone text message she had received from her former husband. He was collected from a Toulouse prison at midnight on Tuesday (16Oct07) by Noir Desir drummer Denis Barthe, who drove him to his country home. The 43-year-old's early release has infuriated feminist campaigners, who argue his case shows a leniency towards men who batter women. Cantat has already compensated two of Trintignant's children and the production company making the television movie the actress was filming at the time of her death, using funds generated from a Noir Desir live album and DVD.
