British sleeper hit Bend It Like Beckham is still scoring remarkably well in America - despite the small number of theatres screening it.

The soccer-themed movie, which helped land its star Parminder Nagra a role in hit medical drama ER, is refusing to fade away, even though it's been cut from an increasing number of cinemas to make room for the onslaught of summer blockbusters.

The FOX SEARCHLIGHT release played in 72 fewer theatres last weekend (20-22JUN03) than the week before, but its ticket sales dropped by a mere 6 per cent in its 16th weekend of release in the US. The flick is currently playing in just 315 theatres, down from its peak of 555 cinemas in early May (03).

STEVE GILULA, president of distribution for Fox Searchlight, says, "We monitor it every week. We may go back and expand again as some of the theatres open up after the summer crunch. In some markets, it has stayed stronger than others, and thee are a lot of new movies coming out."

The film, which currently sits in 14th place at the box office, has so far grossed $23 million (GBP14.3 million) in America.
