Actor Ben Whishaw is "shocked" his British drama The Hour was axed by Tv bosses, branding the cancellation "a blow".

The Skyfall star teamed up with The Wire's Dominic West for the Bbc show, set in a 1950s newsroom, but executives revealed earlier this year (13) they would not be bringing the drama back for a third season.

Fans have launched an online petition to save the series, and Whishaw admits he is upset about the axe because he wanted to see how his character would evolve since the end of season two finished "on a knife edge".

Speaking on British Tv's The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday (10Mar13), he says, "I'm disappointed too, I have to say. I love doing it so much and I love that character and all the other characters.

"I think we all felt that we were coming back together again to finish off the story so it was a bit of a blow to be honest. Apparently there is some big campaign online to persuade the powers that be that they should give us a third one.

"(It's) really frustrating (not to have a proper ending) because you invest in a character and you think you're going to get the next installation of their story so it was a shock and a disappointment."
