Actor SIR Ben Kingsley is thrilled to have received his knighthood - because he had no idea his fellow Brits appreciated him.

The GANDHI star received his honour from Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve (31DEC03), and it made him realise that his reserved fellow countrymen had admiration for his work.

He says, "The English aren't like Americans. The Americans will stop me in the street, yell from passenger cars... saying how much they enjoy seeing me.

"The British don't do that. But suddenly, out of nowhere, they give you a knighthood. That really makes me treasure it. The English are not very outgoing."
