The British actor has come under fire from fellow acting knights of the realm who have called him "pretentious," "barmy" and "insane" for insisting on using the title.
But Freeman took no issue calling his contemporary "Sir Ben".
The humble American - who won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award last year (05) for MILLION DOLLAR BABY - says, "He does ask that you call him Sir Ben. So I always called him Sir Ben.
"Of course I still get star struck. I'm a child of the movies. I grew up with them.
"I'm fascinated and awed by the opportunity to meet people that I venerate as much as Sir Ben."
