Chris Walla Leaves Death Cab For Cutie, Where Do They Go Now?

Death Cab For Cutie Ben Gibbard Tegan and Sara The Postal Service

After a whopping 17 years at the forefront of iconic alternative rock band Death Cab For Cutie, lead guitarist and producer Chris Walla has announced his departure from the group. His exit comes after a decision to focus his creative energies towards other avenues. Walla formed the group alongside frontman Ben Gibbard and bassist Nick Harmer, who are now the only original members holding the fort. Together they produced seven albums, six EP’s and toured the world multiple times. Their blend of fragile alternative rock paved the way for what is now commonly known as ‘emo’, winning millions of fans worldwide through their melancholy songs that were often composed of lush instrumentation and unorthodox instruments.

But with Walla clearly tiring of the band’s direction, where will Gibbard and Harmer go now? Despite Gibbard, who also fronts the cult indie-electro band The Postal Service with Jimmy Tamborello, acting as the group’s main songwriter, Walla’s contribution to the band cannot be overlooked. He has played an integral role in producing and engineering each of Death Cab’s albums as well as lending his production skills to records by Tegan & Sara, The Decemberists and Hot Hot Heat. With Walla absent, Death Cab will have to seek outside help for future efforts. But the group are currently sitting on a fully completed album that has yet to see release- produced in part by Walla, and which will also see the departing guitarist touring to support the release. To ease the band in to an existence without Walla’s guidance, Death Cab employed co-producer Rich Costey for outside input.

A break up is rarely an easy time for a couple but ever get that feeling that some couples, i.e. NOT Rihanna and Chris Brown, were so well-matched that it was hard to imagine them not being an item? Yup, us too, so we restrained ourselves with a list of the top five celebrity couples we reckon never should have parted.

1) Zooey Deschanel & Ben Gibbard

What is love now that we are no longer in a world where the Zooey Deschanels can't make a happy marriage with the Deathcab for Cutie frontmen? Woe is us indeed. Him: the sultry, thoughtful indie singer and guitarist who is responsible for such odes to eternal love as 'I'll Follow You Into The Dark.' Her: the cute, funny and (dare we say it?) quirky actress who, with one flick of her indie girl bangs in 500 Days of Summer, launched an odyssey of shy, introverted teenage dreams against a backdrop of The Smiths songs.

The Postal Service Poke Fun At Themselves In Funny Or Die Video

Ben Gibbard The Postal Service

Hilarious banter abounds from the returning Postal Service as they poked gentle fun at themselves in a Funny Or Die video that pondered what auditions for vocalist Ben Gibbard’s role in the band would have been like after the pair went on hiatus as other band Death Cab For A Cutie grew.

The video was directed by The Best Show On WFMU radio host Tom Scharpling and saw a whole host of stars step in an attempt to take on the role of singer for the dreamily atmospheric synth pop group. Cameos by Duff McKagan, Moby, Aimee Mann, Tom DeLonge, "Weird" Al Yankovic, and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster all came and went during the video, which according to SPIN, lost a little of its zip at nine minutes long.

All of this is added promotion for the pair’s return after nine years away since playing live, with it being a full decade since their critically acclaimed US platinum album Give Up. The group never released an another album following that, though its legend has grown and grown in indie circles, to the extent where some might say Owl City shamelessly ripped off the pair’s soft breezy sound when they emerged onto the scene in 2010. The group have a glut of live shows scheduled for this year, including an American tour and an appearance at Coachella weekend next month.

With Money In The Bank, Zooey Deschanel Finally Divorces Ben Gibbard

Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard

Zooey Deschanel has officially divorced Ben Gibbard, the American indie rock singer with Death Cab For Cutie. The New Girl actress filed for divorce in January, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. They married in 2009 and have no children together.

According to TMZ.com, a judge signed off the divorce on December 12, 2012, with both waving their rights to spousal support. The move kind of makes sense given both are pretty well off financially. Gibbard's group are on their seventh studio album and have a popular following, while Deschanel has risen to become one of the most popular actresses in the U.S. and beyond. Her Fox comedy New Girl has received impressive ratings and reviews, and she remains in-demand in Hollywood. During the divorce filing earlier this month, Zooey's lawyer found it necessary to attach her income and expense declaration, which confirmed her healthy financial state. She makes an average of $95,000 a month though spends only $22,500. She has three credit cards all of which have a zero balance, and has $1,578,000 in the bank. The actress also has an additional $1,645,000 in stocks and bonds and has property worth $693,000. The documents revealed that Zooey spends around $1,000 a month on groceries and household supplies, $500 on eating out, $800 on utilities, $300 on phone and email accounts, $600 in laundry and, of course, $2,000 on clothes.

Oh, and she also donates $1,500 a month to charity.

Zooey Deschanel's Divorce Is Finalised, But She Receives A Golden Globe Nomination

Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard

Having been married for two years and then separated for a year, the divorce between Zooey Deschanel and the Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard has finally come through.

Deschanel filed for divorce late last year after two months of separation. The pair had married in 2009, but as People reports, the divorce papers say: "Unhappy and irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties, which have caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage. There is no possibility that counseling . or mediation could save the marriage."

The 'Elf' star is currently starring in her own series called 'New Girl', in which she plays a kooky teacher living with a group of three guys in a loft apartment in California, for which she's recently received a Golden Globe nomination. As well as acting she has released music in the form of She&Him along side M. Ward, including an adorable Christmas album. Plus, she has her own entertainment website for women called HelloGiggles that takes submissions by readers for articles that are pertinent to their interests as well as to those who read it.

Benjamin Gibbard - Former Lives Album Review

Former Lives is Death Cab For Cutie front man Ben Gibbard's solo debut. The dozen tracks that grace the album take us, in a similar yet slightly chirpier vein to his band work, on a thought provoking journey through Gibbard's self-penned memories and melodies. It's nothing new, pretty much more of the same, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it...

Benjamin Gibbard - Former Lives Album review

'Shepherd's Bush Lullaby' is a stunning a cappella opening to the offering. Its lyrics describe it as a 'melancholy whimsical tune' which is exactly right; through its short duration sounds beautiful, self-provided multi-tracked vocal harmonies. It's soon back to business as usual with 'Dream Song' as Gibbard returns with a sound familiar to what we know from DCFC, characterised by his distinctive vocal tone. 'Dream Song' has a shuffle feel to it underpinned by an almost walking bass line; like Death Cab For Cutie on a low dose of anti-depressants, as evidenced with the brief yet playful piano solo. There's an almost raucous edge to the crunchy opening of 'Teardrop Windows' which sounds Gibbard's vocals over a solid base of strummed electric guitar, drums and bass complete with gentle backing vocal harmonies and occasional Beatles-esque interjections of piano. 'Bigger Than Love' opens with on the beat piano pulsing and a subtly changing two-chord pattern then joined by pulsing snare and strummed acoustic guitar before the grungy electric vibe returns. In fact, the two-chord driving chorus of 'Bigger Than Love' sounds like something right out of Snow Patrol's songbook. The opening bars of 'Lily' bears great resemblance to the Death Cab For Cutie beauty 'I Will Follow You Into The Dark' with gently alternating bass picked through the acoustic guitar pattern, then the track picks up pace again with almost shuffle type percussion. Gibbard's lyrics are always so entrancing and his solo effort is certainly no exception.

'Something's Rattling (cowpoke)' offers a more Latin American vibe with muted trumpet and plucked violin interchanges over the solid strummed ground of this fast waltz. With the 'ooh' refrain there are smooth and slushy trumpet and bowed violin backings amongst the initial call and response theme. It's then back to The Beatles-esque sound with the descending piano accompaniment of 'Duncan, Where Have You Gone?' which underpins Gibbard's smooth multi-part heartfelt vocals later joined by grungy electric guitar. 'Oh, Woe' then changes back to the toe-tapping, light-hearted, blues shuffle glimpsed in the debut's earlier tracks; the light-hearted musical feel continues with the country feel for 'A Hard One To Know'. 'Lady Adelaide' then steps back to the gentle sensitivity of the picked guitar accompanied numbers with its pretty melody also picked out through the guitar line. 'Lady Adelaide' gathers more bite with the inclusion of percussion, both unturned (drum kit) and tuned (xylophone).
