Ben Affleck is reportedly close to signing on to direct and star in Fox’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Witness For The Prosecution. Affleck will soon be directing and starring in the upcoming stand-alone Batman movie and has just wrapped Live By Night for Warner Bros.

Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is close to closing the deal with Affleck, who would also produce the movie along with Jennifer Todd, Matt Damon and the Agatha Christie estate. The script will be written by Christopher Keyser.

Witness For The Prosecution was first adapted for the big screen in 1957 and starred Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. The film earned six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress and Best Director.

The story follows a lawyer who represents a man accused of murdering a wealthy widow, who had become so infatuated with him that she left him her estate. The suspect’s wife, who is initially unable to testify against her husband, is eventually called as a witness for the prosecution because she was actually married to another man at the time of their wedding.

Affleck has so far directed four movies including the upcoming Live By Night which he also wrote and starred in. In 2012 he directed Argo which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film also received six other Academy Award nominations, eventually taking home three awards.
