In the 2004 film, the second of Hawke's Before Sunrise trilogy, the actor's character Jesse reconnects with a French lover, played by Julie Delpy - and now his mum is revisiting an old romance.
He explains, "A couple of years ago... she got an email from a guy (that read): 'You may not remember me, but when I was, like, 17, we met once and I just have always wondered how you are.' She wrote back, 'Of course I remember you, David.'"

Before Sunset stars Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke's dreams of teaming up again for a vampire spectacular have been dashed - because the actor is too busy on stage.
An American Werewolf In Paris star Delpy wanted her pal to play a cameo in her new vampire film, The Countess, but his schedule doesn't allow it.
Speaking to internet gossip Marc Malkin, she says, "He's been out of the picture for a while... He's doing a play right now, and I'm not going to stop my film for two days of work.
"It's not a big deal; he was doing it for fun, for me."
The couple is currently looking for another starring project to do together.
Ethan Hawke credits his Before Sunset director Richard Linklater and co-star Julie Delpy with helping him out of his depression following his divorce from Uma Thurman.
Hawke admits he "couldn't find the joy any longer" when he started shooting the sequel to 1995's Before Sunrise in 2003.
He says, "Around the time of Before Sunset, I just didn't know who I was anymore. I had gotten so depressed that I couldn't find the joy any longer.
"But working with Rick (Linklater) and Julie, my old friends from Before Sunrise, helped me a lot."
Once filming had finished, Hawke sought further solace at the theatre.
He adds, "Since the theatre was my first love, and there's something humbling about the theatre, I just went back there. I wanted to touch my own past a little bit.
"It all coincided with a sense that I needed to rebuild myself after my divorce."
Outspoken movie star Ethan Hawke is desperate for a new Martin Luther King because he feels America needs another spirited leader.
The Before Sunset star believes the US would be in much better shape and his homeland wouldn't be at war in Iraq if a strong voice of reason stepped forward.
The actor says, "We're in desperate need of a Martin Luther King, a Mahatma Gandhi, a Nelson Mandela; the Middle East is in desperate need of somebody to rise up and lead.
"I always think about how nearly every major city in this country has a Martin Luther King Boulevard, King's picture is up in every classroom... and everyone universally admires him - but we all know what he would say about the Iraq war. We turn a blind eye to the things we know he would tell us."
French actress Julie Delpy remains unimpressed with American men because they carry more emotional baggage than women.
The Before Sunset beauty, who left France for Los Angeles, rates her former lovers' bedroom performances highly, but she questions their mental stability and over-analytical approach to life.
Delpy, 35, says, "When it comes to having a relationship with American men, I must admit that I don't really get them. They can be very good lovers, but in their relationships they are often as neurotic as women, if not more so.

Delpy, who is reunited with Hawke in the sequel to the 1995 hit BEFORE SUNRISE, found it a challenge being the only woman working with two men.
