Beck was determined to call his latest album GUERO, because he has spent his life being called a "guero" by Mexicans in his native California.

The term means "white boy" in Mexican Spanish - and has always haunted the Los Angeles-based singer.

He says, "I still do (get called it). I had that word and an idea about doing a song about the neighbourhood I grew up in as a teenager.

"It's one of those things that should have been really obvious, but it took a lot of years to put it together. It ended up being the album title for the lack of a better name."
