BAFTA's Red Carpet: Best and Worst Dressed on the Night [Pictures]

Awards season is when we get to judge not only the acting performances of our favourite Hollywood stars but also their wardrobe choices. The BAFTA’s is always the best place to make a pre-Oscar’s fashion splash, so with that in mind here’s the best and worst of last night’s red carpet dresses.

The best:

First up is ’12 Year’s A Slave’ actress and the fashion world’s latest darling, Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita clearly knew all eyes would be on her and she didn't let us down, wearing a dazzling emerald green Dior Couture gown. She may have lost out on the best supporting actress award, but she definitely won in the style stakes. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt proved that matching outfits have come a long way since Britney and Justin’s denim days. Wearing matching tuxedo’s, Angelina gave a sexy edge to the look in a black suit by Saint Laurent, teamed with an open white shirt and bow tie. Brad also scrubbed up pretty well too.

Naomie Harris showed how to work bright colours in a hot pink Gucci dress, complete with a plunging neckline and a high leg slit. She may have been snubbed for a nomination but she certainly made up for it with this eye catching look. Cara Delevingne's new bestie, Michelle Rodriguez also took the plunge in her Emilio De La Morena leather trimmed dress. The form fitting gown showed off the actresses hour glass figure and the jade colour worked wonderfully to accentuate her skin tone and dark hair.

Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett also scored high on the best dressed list keeping it simple in an Alexander McQueen black gown with metallic formal detailing. She also kept it simple with the hair and makeup, opting for a styled braid and nude lipstick.

Uma Thurman also opted to keep it really simple in her black strapless Atelier Versace gown. Though a safe choice, the form fitting frock did show off Uma’s amazing statuesque figure.

TV presenter Fearne Cotton channeled some vintage valour in her embellished golden gown. Her loosely waved blonde hair also added to her retro glamour look for the evening. Also going for the high glamour look, Dame Helen Mirren went all out to collect her special Bafta Fellowship Award. The veteran actress dazzled in a navy ermbellised gown with ruffling at the bottom, which was fitting for the screen legend.

The worst:

The jury’s out on Amy Adam’s black number. The high neck and collar looked all a bit to conservative and boring for such a glitzy affair. However, this is a Victoria Beckham design so she gets props for keeping it British, maybe next time lose the side bun Amy.

British singer Lily Allen certainly turned heads in her choice, but perhaps not for the right reasons. Her pink and orange Vivienne Westwood number certainly livened up the red carpet. However, she was left looking more like a left over box of Valentine’s chocolates than anything else.

Maggie Gyllenhaal also opted for a more fussy look in a navy Lanvin dress. The highly embellished creation featured pearls, lace and whatever else was in the bottom of the designer’s sewing box. The high neckline also did little to flatter the actress who was sporting her new cropped haircut.

Gillian Anderson, proved that colour blocking isn't always a recipe for success in her blue vintage Balmain dress. As well as being just too many shades of blue to cope with, the odd wrinkly material did little to flatter the usually stunning Gillian.
