Almodovar Rules Out Move To Hollywood

Pedro Almodovar Bad Education

Director Pedro Almodovar has crushed speculation he plans to quit his native Spain for Hollywood.
The maverick movie-maker, responsible for films such as VOLVER and Bad Education, feels he is too old now to change his ways and that the Hollywood method of working would not suit him.
He says, "I'm an artist. I'm part of every decision in a movie. This is not how they work in Hollywood. There the director is part of the crew, not the main creator.
"I'm too old to change now. I wouldn't know how to do it."
The director also laments the worsening standard of Hollywood screenwriting, adding, "They forget the most important thing is the script, and the scripts get weaker and weaker. Technical effects advance, but the literary quality is worse."

When he accepted the role, Murphy admits he was straight on the phone to Bernal for advice on how to dress like a woman.

Almodovar Quits Spanish Academy

Pedro Almodovar Talk to Her Bad Education The Sea Inside

OSCAR-winning film-maker Pedro Almodovar has quit the SPANISH FILM ACADEMY because he is disgusted with its voting procedure for annual awards.

The Talk to Her director was aghast when his latest offering Bad Education lost out to The Sea Inside for the Spanish Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination, and failed to win any GOYAs (Spain's national film award) while ALEJANDRO AMENABAR's movie picked up 14 statuettes.

Almodovar and his producer brother AUGUSTIN criticised new voting protocol, saying they disagreed with new directives which mean artists can only be nominated for awards by members of their own discipline.

Almodovar Threatened With Lawsuit

Bad Education

The outgoing Spanish Government are threatening to sue director PEDRO ALMODOVAR, after he accused it of planning a "coup".

The OSCAR-winner alleged the POPULAR PARTY (PP) tried to postpone last Sunday's (14MAR04) general election - in which they were defeated - with demonstrations outside their Madrid HQ to help them stay in power.

Proclaiming himself happy the party had lost office, Almodovar, who won a best Screenplay Oscar in 2003 for HABLE CON ELLA, said at a press conference to promote his new movie Bad Education on Tuesday (16MAR04), "We were on the point of having a PP coup d'etat. The PP will bring a complaint before the appropriate courts.
