Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose Jr., 6.2.1962)
Axl Rose is best known as the singer of the heavy rock band Guns N' Roses
Childhood: Axl Rose was raised in Indiana - the son of Sharon and William Rose - in a turbulent family environment. The singer has publicly stated that he was sexually abused by William and physically abused by his mother's new husband, Stephen Bailey, who Axl believed to be his biological father whilst he was growing up.
Although he expressed his love of music by singing in church and learning to play piano, he frequently encountered run-ins with the police.
Axl left home at a young age and moved to Los Angeles. He sang for a number of local rock bands, eventually forming Guns N' Roses with Tracii Guns, with whom he had been in the band L.A. Guns. In L.A. he was reunited with Izzy Stradlin. In 1986, he legally changed his name to W. Axl Rose and had the name tattooed on his arm.
The early years of Guns N' Roses: Guns N' Roses was formed in March 1985. The band was a merge of two bands: L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. The band members at this point were Axl, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Duff McKagan.
The band's debut gig was at the Troubadour club in Hollywood. They built a fan base by playing regularly on the L.A. club circuit and eventually caught the eye of a number of record companies.
After a number of line-up changes, the band settled with Rose on vocals, Slash on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Duff McKagan on bass and Steven Adler on drums. They signed to Geffen Records in 1986 and in December of that year, self-released a four-track EP, entitled 'Live?!*@Like A Suicide.'
Guns N' Roses' Commercial Breakthrough: Appetite For Destruction, the band's major label debut album, was released in 1987. Although it sold only 500,000 copies in its first year of release, the band's relentless tour schedule, along with the commercial success of the single 'Sweet Child O' Mine,' propelled the album to the top position of the Billboard 200 album chart the next year. The album has since been certified 15 times platinum and has sold over 27 million copies.
Whilst recording the follow-up to Appetite For Destruction, the band fired Steven Adler, who was struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. He was replaced by Matt Sorum, former drummer with The Cult.
As the band had enough material for two full-length albums, they released Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II at the same time in 1991. The albums debuted at the first and second spots on the Billboard 200 chart. Guns N' Roses are currently the only band in history to have achieved this.
Cracks started to appear in the band, though, as Axl Rose began to make increasing demands on the band. He received sole ownership of the band's name and Stradlin left the group in 1991. He was replaced by Gilby Clarke, who in turn was replaced by Paul Tobias, a childhood friend of Rose's.
Tensions increased when Slash's guitar parts on their cover of 'Sympathy For The Devil' by the Rolling Stones, were replaced with Tobias' parts. Soon, Slash, McKagan and Sorum all left the band, leaving Rose and keyboardist Dizzy Reed as the only members remaining from the debut album era.
Although the name is owned solely by Axl Rose, he co-owns the rights to the band's back catalogue with Slash and McKagan. The three band members tried, unsuccessfully, to prevent Universal and Geffen from releasing a Greatest Hits album.
Rose withdrew from public view as the band collapsed but he is now known to be spending time working on a new Guns N' Roses album, Chinese Democracy.
The band performed their first live shows for three years in 2006, with a new line-up. Rose has been publicly promising the release of Chinese Democracy since 2006, but a release date has yet to be confirmed.
Acting work: Axl played the voice of Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith in the computer game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He has also appeared as an un-credited background performer in the 1988 Clint Eastwood film, The Dead Pool.
Rocker Axl Rose is back on his feet after breaking his ankle just as the Guns N' Roses classic line-up reunion was taking shape.
The singer spent the first shows of the band get together seated on a throne loaned to him by Dave Grohl, who used it onstage after breaking his leg last year (15), but he proved his injury is beginning to heal by walking onstage for the encore of AC DC's 16 May (16) gig in Belgium.
Axl, who has replaced Brian Johnson as the Australian band's frontman for the remainder of their Rock or Bust tour, belted out half of Highway to Hell on his feet before returning to his throne.
He also stood, sporting a bulky metal cast, for part of the band's Riff Raff.

Axl Rose proved to be a hit with AC/DC fans in Portugal as he performed his first full gig with the Australian rockers.
The Guns N' Roses frontman was recently recruited as a temporary replacement for Brian Johnson after the veteran singer was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss".
AC DC had to postpone a string of dates on their Rock or Bust tour as a result, but they resumed the trek on Saturday (07May16) with Axl as their temporary frontman as they hit the stage in Lisbon.
"Nice to meet you!" Axl greeted the crowd, as he hobbled onstage with his broken foot, surrounded by guitarists Angus and Stevie Young, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Chris Slade.

Axl Rose chased the chance to replace Brian Johnson in AC/DC.
The Guns N' Roses star will make his debut as the Australian rock act's new singer in Lisbon, Portugal on Saturday (07May16), and he tells the BBC he jumped at the chance to help the band complete its Rock or Bust tour after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss".
"I called the day I read about it in the news, that there was a situation going on with Brian's hearing," Rose said.
"I called a guy who's their production manager right now... because I knew there was going to be a problem with having dates on sale and dates sold and stuff like that. So if I could help, and if I was able to do it, and they were interested, I'd love to help. And that's how it started.

Axl Rose has made his debut as a member of AC/DC in a strained promotional video for the band's upcoming Lisbon show in Portugal.
The Guns N' Roses singer, who has been drafted into the band as a replacement for Brian Johnson, took a break from rehearsals to sit down for the briefest concert ad with new bandmates Angus Young and Cliff Williams.
Looking weary, Young tried to get enthusiastic about Saturday's (07May16) gig, which will mark the first time Rose will take the stage with the other members of the Back in Black band, stating, "Lisbon here we come. You know we're really excited to be here in Portugal. We're here to give you a great rock show so we hope to see you all there."
After an awkward pause, Rose added, "Absolutely, we're very excited to be there," before Williams added, "We'll see you on Saturday!"

Roger Daltrey is less than impressed by AC/DC's decision to hire Axl Rose as ailing Brian Johnson's replacement, calling their ongoing tour a karaoke show.
Johnson was forced to pull out of the group's Rock or Bust tour after doctors told him he was risking his hearing if he continued.
The decision forced his bandmates to postpone a string of North American shows as they searched for someone to step in for the Brit.
Last month (Mar16), it emerged that Guns N' Roses star Axl was rehearsing with Angus Young and company in Atlanta, Georgia, and the hire was made official last weekend (16Apr16), as Rose hit the Coachella festival stage, with a broken ankle, to perform a headlining set with former GNR mates Slash and Duff MCKagan.

Rockers AC/DC auditioned a tribute band singer before settling on Axl Rose as a replacement for Brian Johnson.
The band's Rock or Bust World Tour was put in jeopardy last month (Mar16) when Johnson, who has fronted the group since 1980, was advised by doctors that performing live would put him at risk of, "total hearing loss."
Earlier this month (Apr16) it was announced that Guns N' Roses singer Rose would take over vocal duties from Johnson on the European leg of tour and at a series of rescheduled U.S. gigs.
However the Australian rockers also considered the leader of an American tribute band for the role of frontman, giving Lee Robinson of the AC DC tribute band Thunderstruck a try-out.

Guns N' Roses' comeback has been hit by tragedy after a fan was killed in a bus crash en route to the band's Mexico City show on Wednesday (20Apr16).
Mauricio Ballesteros Zamora, 35, reportedly died from his injuries after the bus flipped on the Mexico-Queretaro highway. Almost 30 other passengers, all fans of the group, were injured, three seriously, according to local reports.
GUNS N' ROSES kicked off their classic line-up reunion tour with a gig at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and bandmates Axl Rose, Slash and Duff Mckagan headlined the Coachella festival in California on Saturday (16Apr16). They will return to Coachella this weekend (23Apr16) after performing a pair of sold out shows at Foro Sol in Mexico City.
The supergroup will then hit the road in June (16) for a series of North American stadium gigs, while Rose, who is currently sporting a broken foot, will fill in for the ailing Brian Johnson on AC DC's ongoing Rock Or Bust world tour.
Axl Rose was announced as joining the band for the final shows on their word tour, following Johnson’s departure.
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson has released a statement explaining his decision to bow out of the remaining dates on the band’s Rock or Bust world tour. Johnson was advised by doctors to stop touring or face permanent hearing loss, after fronting the hard rock band for over 35 years.
Brian Johnson has spoken out after being forced to step down as AC/DC singer for live shows.
Johnson’s statement comes days after AC/DC announced that Guns ’n’ Roses singer Axl Rose would be fronting the band for the remaining dates of the tour. “On March 7th, after a series of examinations by leading physicians in the field of hearing loss, I was advised that if I continue to perform at large venues, I risked total deafness,” Johnson told fans.
AC/DC star Brian Johnson is "crushed" that he can no longer tour with the band because it could make him deaf.
Johnson bowed out of the band's Rock or Bust World Tour in March (16) because doctors advised him to stop performing live immediately or risk "total hearing loss."
Brian, 68, reveals the doctors' verdict was "the darkest day of my life" in a new statement, in which he admits he had been aware his partial hearing loss was beginning to compromise the quality of his onstage performance because he couldn't hear the guitars or other musicians.
"In all honesty this was something I could not in good conscience allow," he writes in the statement to Rollingstone.com. "Our fans deserve my performance to be at the highest level, and if for any reason I can’t deliver that level of performance I will not disappoint our fans or embarrass the other members of AC DC...
