Inseparable Lion Cub Siblings Cuddle on Journey to Safety

Atmosphere - Max and Mona may be fierce but pictured here, cuddling up to one another during a rescue mission, you'd be forgiven for wanting to climb in and snuggle up with them yourselves! Rescued by animal welfare group Four Paws the lucky lion cubs have been given a new lease on life after being rescued from a refugee camp in the war-torn Gaza Strip. After spending the first two weeks of their lives in the Rafah Zoo, which had been damaged by airstrikes and was struggling financially, the cubs were bought by Gaza resident Saad Aldeen Al-Jamal who wanted to provide them with a better home. The 54-year-old refugee brought the furry siblings back to his flat, where they became a part of the family and playmates to Al-Jamal's six grandchildren! Gradually, however, the cubs started to pose a financial burden to the household, as they grew bigger and needed to consume more and more meat every day. Soon, they would also have to be confined for the safety of their owners. Luckily, animal welfare group Four Paws was able to arrange for the lions' recent release in a rescue spearheaded by veterinarian Amir Khalil. Speaking of the planned mission a spokesperson for 'Four Paws' stated, "The big cats are now five months old, and they're living with the family - which includes small children - under one roof! "That's why we want to get them out of there as quickly as we can, not least for the people's safety; both cubs have already grown quite a bit bigger and stronger since their arrival in the refugee camp, and they now represent a significant danger for the inhabitants of the camp." After careful planning and having finally received authorisation by the Hamas to enter the Gaza Strip, the team began negotiating with the owner and appealed to his common sense. The next morning, a small part of the FOUR PAWS team, who were authorised by the Hamas, entered the Gaza Strip to negotiate with the owner of the lion cubs in the refugee camp for one last time and c - Jordan - Tuesday 14th July 2015 (16 Pictures)
