CBGB Festival To Hold Free Times Square Concert PLUS Music Line-Up Now Announced

CBGB Festival My Morning Jacket The Wallflowers Grizzly Bear James Murphy Atlas Genius Bell X1

The second CBGB Music & Film Festival is set to take over New York next week as hundreds of artists both old and new flood the streets in nearly 175 venues across the city.

The line-up has now been announced for year two of the CBGB Festival which will almost certainly exceed 2012's set-up. On October 8th - 13th, more than 700 artists will spread out in a celebration of some of the greatest music to have ever come out of New York - we are, of course, talking about the legendary 70s club of the same name that was founded by Hilly Kristal and saw the beginnings of icons such as Ramones, Misfits, the Patti Smith Group, Blondie, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Talking Heads.

Must-see artists this year include Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket, Californian quartet The Wallflowers and New York's own Grizzly Bear. We will also get to see a special DJ set by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and all female tribute act Lez Zeppelin will be making an appearance, though with only three songs so make sure you don't miss it! It's not all about Americans either as CBGB happily opens its arms to the likes of Aussie trio Atlas Genius who released their debut album earlier this year and eclectic Irish band Bell X1 who also released an album which reached number one in the Irish charts.

Coldplay Live 2012

Coldplay live CD/DVD Cover

Albums of Note... Coldplay’s Live 2012 album shows a band far more at ease with themselves than their previous live release, from 2003. The Live 2012 package includes both blu-ray and CD. The footage is punctuated by behind-the-scenes interludes and these excerpts showcase each band member’s enthusiasm for their live shows as well as revealing how the material from Mylo Xyloto evolved over time and culminated with them band playing to a vast stadium audiences across the globe. “Live 2012 includes some nice musical moments... the low-key piano intro to 'Yellow', a guest appearance from Rihanna during 'Princess Of China', and the stripped back intimacy of 'Us Against The World'. All of the other elements of big choruses and sing-along's spanning the entire Coldplay back catalogue are present and correct… and Chris Martin's voice seems to have found a renewed strength to cope with the massive venues the band now fills.”

A Week In Music Featuring: Why?, Angus Stone, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, The Lumineers, The Chevin, Joe Strummer And Much More!

Albums of Note... Breaking away from their successful sibling recording partnership, Angus and Julia Stone have both begun releasing equally impressive solo material and this week, we take a look at Angus Stone's latest solo album, Broken Brights. Angus' song writing nods to classic rock legends such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and Johnny Cash. A highlight of the album is the track 'Apprentice of the Rocket Man,' the description of which makes it feel like it may be worth buying the album for this track alone: "The ability of this track to transport you to another world is quite incredible. If you want to experience weightlessness without passing the NASA exam or forking out the $200,000 for a Virgin Galactic flight then sit back, close your eyes and become immersed in Angus Stone's quite brilliant tune."

A Week in Music - October 22, 2012

The second album released by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros is being reissued by the Hellcat record label. Global A Go-Go was an exciting foray into world music for the former Clash frontman and his band of merry men. It was the last album released by Strummer before his death in 2002 but the reissue is light on feeling like a cash-in, on Why?at would have been the year of his 60th birthday. Musically, the Mescaleros were many a world apart from The Clash, but the emotional anger of punk remains. It's an instrumental track, though, that proves to be the focal point of Global A Go-Go: "A 17+ minute reworking of a traditional Irish Folk song closes the album. 'Minstrel Boy' is a perfect way to bring the curtain down as it ebbs and flows like an improvised jam session around a campfire. Featuring a wealth of disparate instruments it brings together many of the musical ideas to be found on Global A Go-Go into one track."
