Northern Irish rockers Ash were lucky to survive when their tour bus exploded after a gig in Los Angeles.

The BURN BABY BURN band were travelling north to San Francisco following a concert at LA's Knitting Factory when their sound man awoke them to tell them the bus was filling with smoke.

After stopping, they discovered the engine was on fire.

Crew members were able to put out the flames with an onboard fire extinguisher, but the band were forced to wait by the side of the road at 4am for a new bus - until the new driver called them to report the replacement had caught also fire.

Ash eventually arrived in San Francisco five hours late and without their equipment.

After borrowing instruments from tour mates The Bravery, the group made their gig at the city's Amphitheatre, and sang hit Burn Baby Burn as a tribute.
