Disney Star Zendaya Will Play Aaliyah in Lifetime Biopic

Disney star Zendaya has just landed the biggest role of her young career.

The 17 year-old multitalented star has been chosen to portray the late R&B star, Aaliyah, in a new made-for-TV movie.

Lifetime announced the casting news of the biopic on Monday (June 16th), via Us Weekly

Aaliyah, who made such hits as 'Try Again' and 'Are You That Somebody,' died at the age of 22 in 2001 after being involved in a plane crash.

The singer and eight others, including hair stylists and various members of her record label, boarded a plane in The Bahamas after filming the music video for the single 'Rock the Boat.'

Shortly after take-off, due to the small aircraft carrying too much weight, it nosedived into the ground and exploding on impact.

The forthcoming biopic, 'Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,' will be based on the best-selling book 'Aaliyah: More Than A Woman', which depicts her debut on 'Star Search,' rise to fame, as well as her tragic death.

Zendaya will obviously play the starring role and is expected to record four hit singles' of the deceased star for the film.

The 'Dancing With the Stars' alum is already a proven singer as she released a self-titled debut album last year (2013), which saw the record's first single sell more than 1 million copies.

'Turn the Beat Around' director Bradley Walsh will be helming the project, and 'Brown Sugar' screenwriter Michael Elliot will be penning the script.
