It's a long way off but Bryan Singer announces a new X-Men project.

The filmmaker revealed yesterday that a new X-Men movie, X-Men Apocalypse, will be headed our way in 2016. Singer is currently working on next year's eagerly anticipated X-Men: Days of Future Past, but clearly wanted to make sure fans stayed hooked on the franchise with word on the next instalment.

There's no word on how well Days of Future Past will perform at the box office but the franchise's solid base of $2 billion grossed worldwide and the practically audible buzz in the air means that any future movies are a pretty solid bet for 20th Century Fox. This includes individual X-Men spin-offs as we saw this year withThe Wolverine.

Slash Film speculates that Apocalypse will follow the Age of Apocalypse storyline from the 1990s in which more time travel creates an alternate timeline and an immortal villain named Apocalypse wreaks havoc on the X-Men, advising to "Think the Thanos of the X-Men storyline."
Wolverine Spin-Off Helped Boost The X-Men Franchise.
Apocalypse was first introduced in the comic book that brought back the original X-Men team members, X-Factor. Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and Jean Grey were reunited years later after Grey was supposedly killed. This could mean that we see a return of the Cyclops and Grey roles back into the movies though it is not known whether this will include a James Marsden and Famke Janssen role reprisal.
20th Century Fox will release X-Men: Days of Future Past on May 23, 2014.
