Will Life Be A Cabaret For Emma Stone?
The actress is in confirmed talks for the lead role in Cabaret - but can she cope with being Sally Bowles?
Emma Stone is being lined up as the next Broadway sensation following confirmed negotiations announced by the Roundabout Theater Company in New York for her to replace Michelle Williams in the production, Cabaret. This would be Stone’s debut Broadway performance if she took on the lead role of Sally Bowles – a part that she was previously touted for last year but had to reportedly pull out of due to scheduling conflicts.

Now she’s back in the fray: will she be any good?
Michelle Williams received mixed reviews upon the opening night of Cabaret’s third Broadway revival with Variety stating: "inspiration flagged in casting Michelle Williams" and The Philadelphia Inquirer announcing: "Michelle Williams, lovely as she is, is the weak link in this big strong cast", although the Associated Press praised her for doing "an excellent job".
Can we expect Stone to be any better?
She has become known for her confident and varied work from action blockbusters in The Amazing Spider-Man, to hilarious comedy in Zombieland and heavyweight drama in The Help and her natural enthusiasm seems like an easy fit for Sally, a character who uses bravado to mask underlying vulnerability.
However, along with praised performances Stone has her fair share of mixed reviews including as her turn in Woody Allen’s latest somewhat lukewarm film, Magic in the Moonlight.
It seems she can sing very well as evidenced when she competed for the role of Laurie Partridge in the 2004 reality show, In Search of the New Partridge Family. But can she master a British accent?
If Stone is successful, it’s likely that she will take over from Williams in early November and run with the production until its close in early January.
The stakes are high and they demand an impressive leading lady for this stalwart of the stage and, if she gets it right, the outcome will be fantastic. But one foot wrong and everything could turn a bit sour for one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
