Why Did Drake Dis Macklemore Whilst Hosting The 2014 ESPY Awards?

Seven months has not been long enough for Drake's wounds, inflicted at the Grammy Awards, to heal. The 27-year-old rapper hosted the ESPY Awards (Excellent in Sports Performance Yearly Awards) on Wednesday (16th July) and performed two new sports themed songs. Unfortunately for another rapper, Macklemore, Drake included some blatantly obvious and envious references to his success.

The animosity between Macklemore and Drake stems from Macklemore's huge success at the 2014 Grammy Awards in January. Macklemore and his partner Ryan Lewis won Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the awards. The controversy stems from the Best Rap Album award which Drake was also nominated for.

After the event, Macklemore contacted another of the nominees, Kendrick Lamar, and apologised for having won the award, further explaining how he had wanted Lamar to win. He congratulated Lamar on his year of music and on his success. Macklemore then posted a screen shot of the text on Instagram and Drake was appalled that he had not received a similar message.

Drake explained his shock and irritation about the text in a Rolling Stone interview but still looked like a fairly poor loser. He said "I was like, 'You won. Why are you posting your text message? Just chill. Take your W [win], and if you feel you didn't deserve it, go get better - make better music." Drake further added how the text "felt cheap. It didn't feel genuine. Why do that? Why feel guilt? You think those guys would pay homage to you if they won?"

But Drake couldn't let the incident go and whilst performing a song on Wednesday he made a blatantly critical reference to Macklemore, also showing a picture of the rapper on the screen behind him. The song, entitled 'Honourable Mentions/Side Pieces', included the lyrics "Real talent doesn't always win championships, like real music doesn't always win Grammys." As the Huffington Post reports, it was during these lyrics that the image of Macklemore holding his Grammy flashed up.

Definitely a classic example of sour grapes.
