Weekend Box Office: Spidey's Back, Back Again

Predictable, but well deserved – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swung its way to the top of the box office charts this weekend. Spidey netted $92 million, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Rentrak, via USA Today. The debut matched most analysts’ predictions and puts The Amazing Spider-Man sequel on track to be one of the biggest movies of 2014, however it doesn’t quite match the first Spider-Man’s $115 million debut from 2002.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 easily slung a web towards the top of the box office.

Despite heavy promotion in the lead up to the film’s release, The Amazing Spider-Man failed to match the standard, set by previous installments in the franchise.

"It was a step down from previous installments in the esteemed franchise," says Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo.

On the bright side, the sequel topped 2012’s reboot, which opened to $62 million on its way to $262 million overall. And "between Captain America, Spider-Man and X-Men in a few weeks, it's safe to say comic properties are still hotter than ever in 2014," says Tim Briody, analyst for Box Office Prophets.

Meanwhile, the Cameron Diaz-starring comedy The Other Woman gave up the top spot, slipping into second with $14.2 million made over the weekend. The film has done $47.4 million in 10 days – it doesn’t compare to Spider-Man’s blockbuster-scale profits, but it’s a good number for an April comedy. It was followed by the religious drama Heaven Is for Real with $8.7 million and Captain America: The Winter Soldier with $7.8 million. Finally, Rio 2 followed closely, rounding out the top five with $7.6 million.

Spidey is the latest in a wave of superheroes to win big at the box office.
