Word: 'Twerk.' Definition: Dance To Popular Music In Sexually Provocative Manner
Miley Cyrus' 'twerk' trend makes the Oxford Dictionary, as does 'selfie,' 'food baby,' and 'pear cider.'
Oh Miley Cyrus has really gone and done it this time. Her 'twerking' craze, which she's aggressively shoved down our throats for the past six months, has made it into the Oxford dictionary - those guys should know better.
The 'twerk' - which Miley performed on Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs 2013 - holds the definition; "dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance."
It is amongst a series of new words that had been included in the latest online revision, including "selfie" (a camera-phone self-portrait), and "digital detox" for time spent offline.
Katherine Connor Martin, from Oxford Dictionaries Online, refused to attribute the twerking trend to Hannah Montana herself, saying it actually became fashionable around 20 years ago and was probably coined as part of the "bounce" hip-hop scene in the United States.
"By last year, it had generated enough currency to be added to our new words watch list, and by this spring, we had enough evidence of usage frequency in a breadth of sources to consider adding it to our dictionaries of current English," she said, as reported by Sky News.
Fellow lexicographer Connor Martin added that the "likely theory" is that twerking is "is an alteration of work, because that word has a history of being used in similar ways, with dancers being encouraged to 'work it'. The 't' could be a result of blending with another word such as twist or twitch."
Cyrus, 21, made headlines with her risqué twerking performance in New York on Sunday, wearing a nude PVC bikini and refusing to put her tongue away, all while gyrating on Thicke, who was performing a medley of his summer hit 'Blurred Lines' and Miley's new single 'We Can't Stop.'
Other new words inducted into the Oxford dictionary in the latest revision include 'street food,' 'pear cider,' and - wait for it - 'food baby.'
