The second weekend brought a massive drop in profits for "Transformers," but the CGI-heavy flick still kept its lead in the charts.
Box office winner time. No need for a spoiler alert here – it was Transformers: Age of Extinction. The franchise’s only competitor this weekend was Melissa McCarthey’s Tammy and with lukewarm reviews, the indie comedy was just no match for the selling power of a bunch of giant robots. Age of Extinction’s $36.4 million mark a 63% drop in its second weekend, but still managed to keep its lead in the chart, with Tammy taking in just $21,2 million for the three-day period. It was a low week for the box office in general, despite the 4th of July being a typical sales booster.
Despite unfavorable reviews, Transformers is doing well at the box office.
"This ranks as one of the lowest Fourth of Julys ever," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, Said for the Huffington Post. "We always think of Fourth of July being a big weekend. This year, we just have to lick our wounds and look forward to 'Planet of the Apes' and some other films to get us back on track."

Transformers couldn’t hold its momentum from the previous weekend, when it opened with $100 million, making it the year’s biggest debut so far. The movie relies largely on the overseas market, where it is doing remarkably well at the moment. This weekend, it raked in $95.8 million from 37 overseas territories, bringing its two-week worldwide gross to $575.6 million. A large chunk of those profits comes from China, where Transformers is on track to become the highest grossing film in history.
