It currently boasts just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and is ranked the worst film in one of the most critically derided franchises of all time, but Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction is campaigning to win Best Picture at the Oscars in February.

Studio bosses at Paramount hope to see Age of Extinction competing in 12 separate categories (mainly in the technicals , though also in Best Picture and Best Director).
The movie starred Mark Wahlberg in the lead for the first time in the series and, well, it seemed to work. The movie has taken $1 billion at the global box-office and a fifth instalment is set for 2016.

Still, Age of Extinction is yet to make an appearance in the awards nominations this year and it seems Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar is the only genre movie to have a chance of winning major prizes at the Oscars.

In fairness, Paramount probably has higher hopes for its other "for your consideration" pitches, which include Selma, The Gambler and Noah. The former was picked as one of the AFI's Top 11 movie of the year.
"In the end, though, this is still a movie about giant robots fighting each other, which is to say it's nearly impossible to take seriously on a narrative level," said Ben Sachs of the Chicago Reader when forced to review Age of Extinction earlier this year.

"Transformers: Age of Extinction is as close to an incoherent mess of movement & noise as cinema gets. Michael Bay is slowly perfecting his brand of blockbuster, and to be honest it's getting quite compelling to watch him fall down this rabbit hole," said Richard Haridy of Quickflix.
