The popular actor and comedian Tracy Morgan has been left in critical condition after a car crash on the New Jersey Turn pike saw the limousine he was travelling overturned, sergeant first class Greg Williams told the Associated Press. One person was killed in the accident.

The 45-year-old 30 Rock star is being treated at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Centre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, a spokesman for the hospital confirmed.

A total of two tractor-trailers, a sport utility vehicle and two cars — along with the limo bus — were involved in the crash, Sergeant Williams said, adding that there were no indications alcohol played a role in the crash. The New Jersey Turnpike was closed for more than five hours after the crash and was reopened at about 6:30 a.m.

"The limo bus is the only vehicle that overturned," Williams, who appears to be the primary source of information, told CNN. "Looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended that limo bus, but that's preliminary at this time." Morgan's assistant, Jeff Millea, was also listed in critical condition, ABC News reported.

Morgan caught his big break when he joined the cast of comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1996. He returned to host in 2009, reprising his roles as Brian Fellow and Astronaut Jones. He then became one of the most loved members of the 30 Rock cast, playing a caricature of himself, Tracy Jordan.

Friends and colleagues took to social media to express their concern. "Sending prayers and love to @RealTracyMorgan & all injured in the NJ accident. I'm pulling for you brother," wrote actor Dulé Hill.

Jay Mohr wrote: "I'm from NJ. For the Turnpike to be closed for hours is incredibly, frighteningly rare. I love you @RealTracyMorgan. No more comics, God."
