Rob Brydon Announces 'The Trip To Italy' Will Premiere at Sundance 2014

Rob Brydon has taken to Twitter to give fans of The Trip a welcome announcement; a film version of the second series – which sees the pair travel to Italy instead of England’s lush North – is to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2014, with an episodic TV version to follow.

The Trip to Italy follows the same format as The Trip, with Steve Coogan and Brydon playing themselves, and travelling to various restaurants, doing ridiculous impressions in a constant game of sometimes-light-hearted one-upmanship.

Brydon, whose impressions and jibes are decidedly more potent than Coogan’s in the first series, broke the news. “Some Trip to Italy news...” he teased on Twitter, before posting: “Film version premieres at Sundance 19th January,” and “Episodic tv version in UK next year. I know not when.”

Back in April, Coogan confirmed the Mediterranean location for the follow up. "We are going to Italy," he told Empire. "I went there three weeks ago to meet Rob and [director] Michael [Winterbottom] to go for dinner and talk about what we were going to do. What other characters were going to be in it. That's a bit of research I suppose, but I'm going to have to do some reading.

"We're supposed to be retracing the footsteps of the Romantics, of Shelley and Byron and Keats, and I don't know enough about it. I'm damned if Rob's going to come across as an authority on it. It'll be a great motivation for me to read up on it so that when we improvise, I can drop some information on him. Sometimes you try to compete with each other in improvisation by using dirty tricks.”

Sundance will be hitting London for the third time in April 2014. It’s the only European location for the Utah-based independent film festival, and will mark a blossoming relationship once again. It’s assumed, by us mainly, that The Trip to Italy will premiere on the London leg, but Utah festival-goers could be lucky enough to get it first – Brydon wasn’t clear about that in his Tweet.
