The Television Critics Association Awards: Winners and Losers

Although it ended last September, 'Breaking Bad' is continuing to reign supreme when it comes to awards. The drama scooped the top prize at Sunday night’s Television Critics Association Awards, Program of the Year.

However, star Bryan Cranston missed out on one more award for his portrayal of meth cook and criminal mastermind Walter White; the prize for Individual Achievement in Drama went to  for his standout performance in the critically-acclaimed HBO series ‘True Detective’. The series also scooped the prize for Best Mini-Series but lost out on the award for Best New Program of the Year, which instead went to Netflix exclusive prison dramedy ‘Orange is the New Black’.

Matthew McConaugheyBetween Dallas Buyers' Club and 'True Detective', 2014 has undisputedly been McConaughey's year

‘Seinfeld’ alumni Julie Louis-Dreyfuss picked up another honour for her role in political comedy ‘Veep’, beating last year's winner Louis C.K (who won for comedy-drama 'Louie'), although the two popular programmes shared this year's Outstanding Achievement in Comedy Award.

Cult favourite 'RuPaul’s Drag Race' – which recently hit the headlines due to transphobia controversy – was also a winner, picking up the award for Best Reality Series, beating off stif competition from big names 'Survivor' and 'The Voice'. In the Heritage Award category, long-running NBC variety show ‘Saturday Night Live’ won the accolade over 'Twin Peaks', 'Lost', 'Star Trek' and 'South Park', recognising its contribution to the landscape of American television.

The Television Critics Association Awards come just over a month before the Emmys, considered by many to be the biggest accolade for programmes and TV stars. Many of the winners and losers from the TCAAs will compete again, including Bryan Cranston and Matthew McConaughey, who will go head to head once more on August 25th. Cranston has already won three Emmys for his performance on 'Breaking Bad', but can either of them beat off the competition from their fellow nominees; Kevin Spacey, Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm and (McConaughey’s ‘True Detective’ co-star) Woody Harrelson?

Tune in on the night to find out!
