Kim Kardashian, The Nuclear Physicist? Critics React To 'The Other Woman'

We had high hopes for Cameron Diaz’s new movie The Other Woman. Both Diaz and co-star Leslie Mann have a proven track record for churning out some pretty decent comedy movies. While we weren’t sure about Kate Upton launching an acting career, the dynamic between the three in the trailer seemed promising.

Yet despite knocking Captain America: The Winter Soldier off the top spot, a feat which Rio 2, Transcendence and Draft Day all failed to do, critics have not been wholly kind about The Other Woman. Geoffrey Macnab of the Independent surmised, “The plotting is predictable, the cameo from Nicki Minaj is pointless and some of the humour is sadistic in the extreme, but the film yields at least a few chuckles along the way.”  While not completely slating the film, Macnab certainly doesn’t seem entirely won over.

Aisle Seat’s Mike McGranaghan was, likewise, less than impressed by The Other Woman, describing it “as insightful about infidelity as Kim Kardashian would be about nuclear physics. What a detestable piece of crud this picture is.” A thoroughly inventive, if not praiseful, review from McGranaghan.

Kristian Harloff of Schmoes Know was similarly unimpressed, “A disappointing attempt at comedy that ends up being three talented, attractive women failing to make us believe this story or laugh at its absurdity.”

While the critics may not have have enjoyed The Other Woman, it seems as though the audience do. While the film has received a poor 26% fresh critic rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, 69% of the audience enjoyed it. The audience is sort of the ones that the movie was made for, so if it isn’t a flop in their eyes then that’s really all that counts.

Cinema goers have begun comparing The Other Woman to Bridesmaids, or at least describing it as ‘another Bridesmaid wannabe’. For the obvious reasons there are similarities, a female cast heading a comedic movie was a pretty rare thing until Bridesmaids. However, the critics were almost unanimous in their praise for Kristen Wiig’s 2011 wedding comedy, something that The Other Woman certainly hasn’t managed to achieve.
The movie seems to just fall that little bit short, which is a shame because the concept (however much like a grown up version of John Tucker Must Die it is) has a lot of potential.
