Yesterday saw the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on DVD, which leaves us free to obsessively think about the final instalment of the trilogy! The Hobbit: There and Back Again is the third and last film based on JRR Tolkien’s 1937 book of the same name and will provide us with a conclusion to the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the band of dwarves. But what do we know about The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and what can we expect?

Bilbo Baggins The HobbitWill Bilbo play more of a backseat role in the upcoming movie?

The second film left us on a monumental cliffhanger. With Smaug finally sick of talking he makes his way towards Laketown, breathing “I am fire, I am death.” Cue credits. Thanks a lot, Peter Jackson! We’re guessing that Bard will be having none of Smaug’s home invasion, there were some hints dropped that he may be whipping out his black arrow (not a euphemism) and fighting back against the greedy guts who’s been hogging all that gold for years.  Luke Evans, who plays the Bard, told MTV, “We’ve only just touched on Bard’s real storyline. It’s exciting. That’s why I’m so excited about it.” We’re pretty darn excited too!

So, those that have read the books know that Thorin goes a little cray cray when he finally gets his treasure back. We reckon there will be a lot of tortured, nutty Thorin scenes, so we’re hoping for lots more Richard Armitage in the final film. Richard Armitage spoke to DigitalSpy about which scene he’s most excited about in the upcoming film, “the Battle of the Five Armies, we know that it’s gonna be big…Peter [Jackson] is very interested in the first and second world wars, he will probably create something pretty spectacular.” The Battle of the Five Armies takes place on the Lonely Mountain and is fought between the Wargs and Goblins against the Elves, Dwarves, Eagles, Men of Dale and a shapeshifter.  Sounds like it will be pretty epic to us!

The Hobbit There and Back AgainWe'll pass on fighting a war against these guys, thanks very much

Tauriel was invented for the trilogy of movies, which was a great move by Jackson to add a strong female lead into the mix. We’re hoping to see more of her interracial relationship with Killi, although we wonder how Legalas will deal with his jealousy in the final movie. If Killi and Tauriel do shack up, where would a Woodland Elf and a dwarf make a home? Would their children be short with white blond hair? Or tall with dwarf like features? These are the important questions. Either way, we don’t blame Tauriel, Killi is pretty hot as dwarves go.

What are you expecting to see from The Hobbit: There and Back Again? Will you be sad to see the entire JRR Tolkien franchise finally come to an end?
