The 'Ellen DeGeneres Show' Becomes First US Talk Show To Air In China
The 'Ellen DeGeneres Show' will now be available to the Chinese population through the country's leading online video service provider, Sohu.com.
The 'Ellen Degeneres Show' will obtain a huge boost in ratings as it can now be viewed by the Chinese population.
News first surfaced of the daytime talks-show going international, this past Tuesday (Jan 21st), when the host, Ellen, made the announcement.
Ellen told the audience and viewers that her show will be "the first American talk show to air in China".
'Ellen Degeneres' will be broadcast on China's leading online video provider, Sohu.com, 48 hours after their original air time in the US, with subtitles.
The 11th series episodes will be available 24/7 for viewers until the licence terminates, according to Sohu chairman and CEO Charles Zhang and Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, reports The Los Angeles Times.
"Sohu offers Chinese Internet users a diversified portfolio of top-quality content, with a wide coverage of hot TV dramas, animation and now U.S. talk shows," said Zhang.
Adding, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show is one of the most well-known talk shows in the U.S., and we believe it could also have strong appeal and relevance with the Chinese audience."
Approximately there are 600 million internet users in China so breaking into that market is a mouth-watering concept for US networks, but due to China's strict censoring guidelines it is difficult to achieve.
However, the nature of 'Ellen' is fairly soft and family friendly, so Chinese officials shouldn't be against it.
Jeffrey Schlesinger added, "Ellen has clearly differentiated herself and her talk show from so many of the controversial conflict-oriented talk shows as it has become an increasingly positive alternative in daytime featuring the biggest stars from worlds of film, television and music."
