China Have a Big Ban Theory for a Certain American Sitcom

“The Big Bang Theory” is the latest American export to endure censorship over in China. The popular U.S sitcom, which features a group of super intelligent, highly nuanced and super high maintenance geeks – and Penny - living out their professional and personal lives in Pasadena, California.

Streaming websites in China, like Youku.com and Sohu.com, display the message “This video can’t be viewed due to policy reasons” when users try and access TBBT. This has created a backlash on social media, with many Sina Weibo (China’s Twitter) expressing their dismay given the popularity of the show in the country.

“The reason that ‘The Big Bang Theory’ was banned is because it’s just too hot in China,” said Lou Hongyu, a Weibo account user in Shanghai. “Why were these four TV shows banned? The authorities may be making an example of a few, but who are they going to frighten?” asked The Oriental Daily in another Weibo post, before quoting Sheldon’s, “I like China. … See, they know how to keep people in line.” (The Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch found those)

It’s not just juvenile 30-somethings working in complicated, high pressure jobs that have been removed from China, either; “The Good Wife,” “The Practice,” and “NCIS” have all been pulled, too. The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television didn’t offer up a reason behind the decision,  spokeswoman for Youku.com - who couldn’t be named because of company policy – revealed.
