Teen Hottie Lorde Hates Being Called a 'Teen Hottie'

Lorde was one of the surprise artists of 2013, bursting onto the scene with a hit song — and doing it all at the age of 17. But the singer hasn't been shy about her feelings for the music industry, or the world of pop culture.

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, told the New York Times there are certain classifications she would like to avoid.

"The phrase 'teen hottie' literally makes me want to throw up," she said, adding that she doesn't mind all nicknames.

"I'm a pop princess at heart," Lorde explained. "Pop is about distilling what you want to say and making it easy. And the way I write isn't about making things easy. It's a weird juxtaposition."

Lorde has called out numerous pop stars for their antics, but also admits to liking songs like Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball. She doesn't have any straightforward love songs on her album.

"Some people love writing about that, and that's fine," she said. "But I personally haven't found a way to do it yet which is innovative and feels new to me."

No matter how her music evolves and she gets older, Lorde is happy knowing she has stayed true to herself.

"I would like to think that my public persona comes naturally to me and isn’t that dissimilar to my real way of doing things," she said. "I've turned down easily tens of millions of dollars doing what I do and saying no to things that I think are corny."
