A Dejected Saoirse Ronan Looks Back As Star Wars Moves Forward With Casting

Saoirse Ronan may be one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars, but she won’t be yielding lightsabers or galaxy-hopping when the Star Wars franchise is rebooting with Episode VII. The New York-born actor announced that she would be auditioning for the role.

"I don't have 'Star Wars.' I don't have the role," Ronan said told Indie Wire's The Playlist, who noted that she sounded “defeated when she told them the news. "I just shouldn't have said anything. I just auditioned for it, like everyone else did."

Ronan divulged the exact details of the audition process – at least partially – as she looks back on her missed opportunity. "To pretend that you have a lightsaber in a scene is always very exciting,” she explained. “It would be great. But it's something that everyone's gone up for."

With a lack of concrete news with regards to casting, the Internet has turned to rumor and hearsay to fill the film with what would be a fantastic cast. Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sullivan Stapleton, Liam McIntyre and Simon Pegg has all been mooted.

Finally, a Star Wars release date is announced

Disney purchased LucasFilms and indirectly, the Star Wars franchise for around $4 billion in October last year, prompting a reboot of the movies. Another trilogy is planned, which will bring the total amount of films in the series to nine. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are also rumoured to be making a return.

The film will, undoubtedly, feature a mixed cast, with big names and unknowns combinined. A strong British contigent is also expected, with open auditions having kicked off in Bristol and set to move on to London, Manchester and Glasgow in the next few weeks.

"It wouldn't be 'Star Wars' if there wasn't some fantastic actors who happen to be British," the film’s director J.J Abrams told Newsnight last Friday (Nov 8.) - via The Guardian. "But I think we're doing our job and looking everywhere for the best possible actors for the roles."

Abrams added: "Nothing is more important. There are things that are as important, but nothing is more important than casting a movie great and I have been incredibly lucky to be involved in projects that we've had wonderful casts and wonderful casting directors to make it happen.

"The last thing you want to do, when you're collaborating on something, is work with people where you have to do their job for them and kind of give them notes every way. You want people who inspire you and elevate it."

U.S auditions will be hitting Chicago this Thursday, according to the city’s Tribune.
