Gary Oldman Would Be A Real Coup For Star Wars: Episode VII
Of all the rumors we've heard, Oldman is our favorite
Is Gary Oldman about to add to his ridiculously impressive list of franchises by appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII? That’s what the rumors are suggesting, and Oldman did little to quell them when he confirmed a phone call took place.
When are we going to have an Episode VII logo to play with?
"They've called," said Oldman in an interview with Sky Movies. "You know, I'm more cynical about it now. I'll believe it when I'm on the plane home. The deal isn't done, but yeah, they've inquired. I mean Planet Of The Apes, Harry Potter, Batman, and Star Wars… bloody hell!"
The supposed cast members for the new Star Wars movie – directed by J\.J\. Abrams – have been voluminous; Dame Judy Dench, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zac Efron and Aaron Paul have all been linked, while original stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hammil and Harrison Ford have all confirmed comeback roles.
But Oldman would be a real coup. A shared Star Wars demographic already loves him for his roles in the aforementioned blockbusters, bringing with him not only star power, but also true Hollywood pedigree. All that’s left to do it hope it comes off.
The Star Wars reboot was announced when Disney acquired LucasFilm and the entire Star Wars empire for over $4b last year. It was a huge move from the multinational mass media corporation, who as well as planning a further three movies, intend to stretch the sci-fi franchise as far as it’ll go with a theme park.
The project hasn’t been free of headaches, though; script issued plagued the early processes, with exec producer Barbara Broccoli and Abrams working hard to secure a solid screenplay, ensuring the franchise doesn’t descend further into critical oblivion.
Then there were location issues, with Abrams struggling to relocate to a British filming spot. But with those problems ironed out, and casting soon (surely?) to be finalised, Episode VII finally seems to be gathering some legs.
Gary Oldman + Star Wars = Yep
