"Elton and I will marry," Furnish explained to Attitude magazine. "As a high-profile couple, we feel it is our duty to do it, to make sure that everyone knows that this is something that many gay men living in this country never dreamed would happen."

Having been civil partners for years, the pair will finally be able to call themselves husband as husband as the state now recognises same-sex marriage in the same light as traditional marriage.

"As something of a showman, [Elton] is aware that whatever he says and does, people will sit up and take notice. So what better way to celebrate that historic moment in time,” added Furnish. "Elton and I both think there is a massive difference between calling someone your 'partner' and calling them your 'husband'”.

And for the pair, who have adopted children, this is an important step for the future of society. "When Zachary and Elijah are grown up and having children of their own, they will – hopefully – be living in a world where everyone can be equal, when being married isn't about whether you're straight or gay, but simply about being human."

David and Elton became civil partners on the day it came into law in on 12 December 2005. "Our big day made the news," said David. "It was all over the internet within minutes of happening and front page news the next day."

Prime Minister David Cameron took to Twitter to congratulate those who had already tied the knot. "Congratulations to the gay couples who have already been married," he wrote. "And my best wishes to those about to be on this historic day."

As an American who doesn't know, it is my understanding that the wife of a knight is entitled to be addressed as Lady, so what is the husband of a knight called? A woman who is knighted in her own right is called a Dame but her husband has no matrimonial honorific. Would introductions here still be "Sir Elton John and Mr. David Furness?" I'm not trying to troll, I'm just curious since this is new ground.
