"I have watched the VMAs every year since I was a kid," the 22-year-old said after being announced as a performer. "I am so insanely nervous but also so honoured to be performing. This truly is a pinch yourself moment for me."

Not only will the 'Lay Me Down' singer be signing at the ceremony, which will be held at California's renovated venue The Forum, but he is also nominated for two awards.

'Stay With Me' landed Smith a nomination in the Best Male Music Video category, where he faces tough competition in Pharrell Williams' 'Happy,' John Legend's 'All of Me,' Ed Sheeran's 'Sing,' and Eminem and Rihanna's 'Monster.'
