Oh No - Is 'Last Vegas' Bad? Say It Ain't So! De Niro + Legends Fail to Deliver

What a risk this was: Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline sharing a screen as four old friends travelling to Las Vegas to fulfill some sort of nostalgic dream of a bachelor party in the debauched city.

All four actors have made brilliant films, and are all screen legends in their own right. Apart from maybe Kline, who recently starred as 'Wounded Soldier' in 2012’s Oscar-winning Lincoln – one of his best films.

But you get the picture: they all bring a kind of levity to the screen, making an ensemble buddy comedy in the ilk of The Hangover such a risky prospect. What happens if it all fails miserably? Well, we’re about to find out.

“The characters are totally passive -- money, drinks, women, and unexpected acclaim shower down on these elder-bros like Werther's Originals from God's own cardigan pocket, completely unearned by the characters or the screenplay,” writes Chris Packham of Village Voice.

Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, writing for AV club, wasn’t impressed either: “Reality-bending silliness-or even a good gross-out joke or two-would be preferable to the stale, corny jokes this movie tries to pass off as comedy.”

It wasn’t all bad: with their school grading system, Entertainment Weekly offered up a B-. “I steeled myself for the moment when these four would fall into what-happens-in-Vegas ''high jinks,'' but fortunately, they don't,” said Owen Gleiberman.

Overall, though, the critics weren’t kind to the old movie sages. A culmulative score of 39% doesn’t make kind reading, especially for a bunch of actors who feature in most peoples top 10 lists. You can check out our interviews with the Last Vegas cast here.
