HBO has confirmed that The Notebook actress Rachel McAdams and Black Box star Kelly Reilly have joined the season 2 cast of True Detective. The network also announced that Taylor Kitsch would appear too, though we already knew that.

The eight-episode season is now in production in California and centres on three police officers and career criminal who must navigate a "web of conspiracy" in the aftermath of a murder. Colin Farrell takes the lead as Ray Velcoro, a detective whose allegiances are torn between his bosses in the corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. That very mobster is played by Vince Vaughn, whose empire is in danger of crumbling after a legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of his business partner.

McAdams will play Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff's Oficce detective whose bullish ethics put her at odds with the system she serves. Kitsch - who recently starred in Lone Survivor - plays a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the CHP. English actress Reilly plays Vince Vaughn's wife and a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his various enterprises.

Season two is once again written by Nic Pizzolatto and will be directed by numerous filmmakers including the Fast & Furious helmsman Justin Lin. Much of the acclaim lauded on the first season was for Cari Fukunaga's stunning direction - this despite rumors of bad-blood on-set, which Pizzolatto recently denied.

"Cary and I worked together really smoothly," he told the Hollywood Reporter, "There was never any contention. Of course, you're going to have discussions and difference of opinion, but what matters is that everyone is working without ego toward the best realization of what we have. It's just the question of if I want to. It's certainly an ideal field to test oneself, yet at the same time I might not want to mess up my own show."
