Producers Pull The Plug On Star Studded ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Arena Tour Just Days Before Debut Performance
Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams and ex Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten were among the cast.
A star studded cast taking a much loved musical on tour, what could have gone wrong for ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’? Frankly, we don’t know but on Friday (May 29th) producers abruptly pulled the plug on the upcoming arena shows with no explanation given.
The cast of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'
Michelle Williams, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), N Sync’s JC Chasez and Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd were all part of the tour which was due to commence in New Orleans on June 9th. The show’s website gave no details on why the tour was cancelled, but stated that purchased tickets would be refunded. It has been reported that elements of the production had already arrived in New Orleans before the announcement was made.
Some cast members have taken to twitter to voice their disappointment over the cancellation. Brandon Boyd told his followers, “I got fired from #JesusChristSuperstar today....but so did the rest of the cast so we're all sad together. Yeah, it's true. Tour cancelled.” While actor Ben Foster, who was set to star as Jesus wrote, “My heart is broken. My beautiful talented cast and company I adore. This wonderful show & opportunity is over. I'm so sorry I am devastated.” Foster also stated that he had been in New Orleans mid rehearsal with Chasez and that they were ready for the shows.
Michael Cohl, the show’s producer who has also worked on ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’, had announced the tour in April revealing that the tour would cost in the “eight figures” and would need to pull in "several hundred thousand dollars" each night to keep it on the road.
