So, it looks like the Point Break remake is set for release in August 2015. Directed by Ericson Core, whose only other big directing job was 2006’s Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg, the new script has been written by Total Recall remake co-writer Kurt Wimmer.  There's a whole lot of action movie experience going on there, which is a promising start.  Core was also the director of photography for The Fast and the Furious way back in 2001, so we've got faith his visuals will be pretty impressive - that's for sure.

Luke Bracey Point Break remakeLuke Bracey has been cast as Johnny Utah in Point Break, a role originally played by Keanu Reeves

The 2015 remake is pegged to be an unofficial reboot of The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film of the same name, which starred Keanu Reeves as an ex-quarterback-turned-FBI-agent and Patrick Swayze as a system fighting surfer.  After it's suspected that a gang of bank robbers, nicknamed 'The Ex-Presidents,' are potentially a group of surfers, Agent Utah is sent in to infiltrate their group.

Who’s going to be who in the new film then? Ray Winstone’s been cast but his character hasn’t actually been announced. We’re guessing that he’ll play Angelo Pappas, Johnny Utah’s veteran FBI partner. Pappas was originally played by Gary Busey, who may be the total opposite of Ray Winstone in terms of acting. Does that mean that the role will be altered, or will Winstone have to veer away from his usual Brit tough guy routine?

Can anyone play Johnny Utah like Keanu Reeves played Johnny Utah? Well, it seems as though Luke Bracey is going to give it a shot! Bracey may look more like Swayze’s Point Break character with his floppy blond hair and surfer-ish physique, but the Australian G.I. Joe: Retaliation actor has been cast as Utah.

Edgar Ramirez Point BreakWill Edgar Ramirez live up to Patrick Swayze's famous performance as Bodhi?

There were rumors that Gerard Butler had been cast to play Bodhi, the head of the gang of surfers infiltrated by Utah. The late, great Patrick Swayze had originally played the role and those that have seen the original know that he really made it his own. Will Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez be able to rival Swayze?

Point Break has a huge cult fan base, so it will have some serious expectations to live up to. Some remakes have butchered the originals, let’s hope that this doesn’t happen with this one.

Are you a fan of the original film?  Are you pleased to hear that there's a remake in the works, or, like other classic films, is the original enough?
