Judi Dench & Steve Coogan In Philomena.
The narrative follows journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan); a once political journalist who begins to follow a new line of 'human-interest' enquiry when a stranger who knew he was a reporter approached him and mentioned that she had a friend with a secret family mystery that needed solving. He was led to Philomena Lee (Dench) who had a secret she'd kept tightly locked away for 50 years: she had a son who she'd never told anyone about.
The reason for her secrecy was the boy's illegitimacy; a sin harshly condemned in strict Catholic 1950s Ireland. Philomena was sent to live with nuns and then when she had her baby he was sent away to America to be adopted by a couple in Missouri. Back in Ireland, The Mother Superior threatened the 18 year-old with "damnation" if she ever confessed her secret and exploited her mercilessly as a worker. Martin and Philomena go on a hunt for the son in what looks to be a completely enthralling story.

Stephen Frears, director of The Queen and Tamara Drewe, directed the British Film Institute-funded film and Steve Coogan co-wrote the screenplay that was adapted from a real life novel written by Martin Sixsmith, the former BBC correspondent and Labour government advisor. The story of Philomena Lee, whose son was sold to an American couple, is in fact a true story, based on the 2009 book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a 50 Year Search that told the amazing story of a mother searching for her son.
Philomena will be released on 1st November in the UK.
