The PGA Awards 2014 welcomed an array of producers and actors to the red-carpet last night (19th January 2014). According to BBC News, the guild saw a first in both 12 Years A Slave and Gravity being awarded the Daryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, forcing a never before seen tie at the awards ceremony.

The 6,000 member guild attended the 25th Annual ceremony aware that there was razor-thin competition for some truly exceptional films of 2013/2014. Steve McQueen and Brad Pitt's 12 Years A Slave as well as David Heyman and Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity were acclaimed in a field of highly recognised motion pictures such as David O. Russell's American Hustle, Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Ben Affleck announced the awards on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton, according to Variety Magazine. Affleck won the award for his movie Argo and said comically "this is a legitimate mathematical numerical tie - but it was the producers who told me so." He welcomed the Gravity directors up first to the microphone.

Cuaron mocked himself as a "stubborn" and "uncompromising director", whilst then turning his extended thanks to his son Jonas Cuaron. Steve McQueen simply stated for 12 Years A Slave, "Thank you so much for opening your hearts and minds to this film." Brad Pitt also had a contribution to the speech, stamping his personal feelings about the film, claiming it represented an opportunity "to contribute something to the yearly narrative, to culture, and that is f*cking cool."

The ballot-box style of voting is much preferred for many of the guild's members, and now the race has begun for the filmmakers to keep their fingers crossed, and wait for the Oscars to unveil their decisions. The tie has left both films in the running for an award, and there is angst and excitement still rife in the air on who could potentially win Best Picture.
