Capaldi is a "life-long Doctor Who fan" and his appointment as The Doctor has fulfilled his life's ambition. The 55-year-old actor has appeared in Doctor Who before in the episode 'The Fires of Pompeii' in season 4 of the revitalised science fiction series.

Capaldi will be the twelfth actor to play Doctor Who since its first broadcast in 1963. Having obtained the role, Capaldi was sworn to secrecy and said, when revealed as The Doctor, that it was "so wonderful not to have to keep the secret any longer."

The announcement was made on a special broadcast Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor on Sunday (4th August). Airing at 7pm on BBC1 in the UK and 2.30pm on BBC America, the show was hosted by Zoe Ball and featured numerous celebrity fans of the show.
