Peter Capaldi - From The Crombie Coat To The Doc Martens, The Doctor's New Look Is Revealed

Doctor Who fans got a real treat yesterday, when the costume of the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, was unveiled. The Doctor’s costume is hugely identifiable with the actor who wore it – Tom Baker’s scarf or Matt Smith’s bowtie being a couple of examples. Capaldi’s outfit will consist of a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, white shirt and black Dr Marten shoes, possibly an echo of the tenth Doctor’s Converse shoes. It's the work of costume designer Howard Burden.

The Doctor’s regeneration in the 2013 Christmas special was watched by an estimated 10.2 million people, but now Capaldi will have to impress the hardcore Whovians tuning into the eighth series of the British sci-fi classic this autumn (the premiere air date is still to be announced).

Peter Capaldi, Sky's Women in Film
Capaldi took over the Doctor's duries during last year's Christmas special.

Capaldi is currently co-starring on the BBC series The Musketeers, playing Cardinal Richelieu. He is also on set for Doctor Who, which will continue filming until August. Series 8 will see Steven Moffat return as leadwriter with Ben Whitley moving in as director. For BBC News, Moffat said: "New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you.”

Steven Moffat
Showrunner Steven Moffat is excited about the Doctor's new look.

Doctor Who took two honours at last week's National Television Awards - best drama and drama performance for Smith. The record-breaking 50th anniversary special last year was the second to last performance Smith gave for Doctor Who, with the regeneration (13th or 14th, the math gets a bit complicated on DW) taking place during the Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor.
