Grammy winner Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell have been going through some marital trouble lately. The two appeared in court on Monday to face domestic violence charges stemming from a dispute at their New Canaan home Saturday night. At the time, the two insisted that the fight was an isolated incident and that a protective order was not needed. In fact Brickell, a 47-year-old recording artist claimed that she had started the fight.

At 72, Paul Simon doesn't seem to have any trouble expressing himself.

“I got my feelings hurt and I picked a fight with my husband,” Edie Brickell said in a statement via the New York Daily News. “The police called it disorderly. Thank God it’s orderly now.”

Brickell and Simon, 72, seemed to be getting along well enough at the trial. After the initial arrest for disorderly conduct, the couple reportedly held hands in when they stood before the judge. Simon admitted that the two did indeed go through a few bumps in the road, but insisted that “both of us are fine together.”

“We’re going to go home and watch our son play baseball,” Simon said in the Norwalk, Conn., courtroom. “We had an argument, which is atypical of us. Neither of us has any fear, or any reason to be threatened.”

To bolster his point, Brickell, who towered over her husband even in flat boots, added: “He’s no threat to me at all.”

Judge William Wenzel cut the couple a break and declined to issue a protective order on the condition that they behave themselves. The pair are due back in court in a couple of weeks, on May 16.
